Unsymmetrical polysulfidation via designed bilateral disulfuratingreagents
- Sulfur-sulfur motifs widely occur in vital function and drug design, which yearns for polysulfide construction in an efficient manner. However, it is a great challenge to install desired functional groups on both sides of sulfur-sulfur bonds at liberty. Herein, we designed a mesocyclic bilateral disulfurating reagent for sequential assembly and modular installation of polysulfides.
- Based on S-O bond dissociation energy imparity (mesocyclic compared to linear imparity is at least 5.34 kcal mol-1 higher), diverse types of functional molecules can be bridged via sulfur-sulfur bonds distinctly. With these stable reagents, excellent reactivities with nucleophiles including C, N and S are comprehensively demonstrated, sequentially installing on both sides of sulfur-sulfur motif with various substituents to afford six species of unsymmetrical polysulfides including di-, tri- and even tetra-sulfides.
- Life-related molecules, natural products and pharmaceuticals can be successively cross-linked with sulfur-sulfur bond. Remarkably, the cyclization of tri- and tetra-peptides affords 15- and 18-membered cyclic disulfide peptides with this reagent, respectively.

AllylsilaneReagent-controlled Divergent Asymmetric Catalytic Reactions of 2-Naphthoquinone-1-Methide
We reported herein the first allylsilane reagent-controlled divergent asymmetric Hosomi-Sakurai conjugated allylation and hetero-Diels-Alder (HDA) with 2-naphthoquinone-1-methide (2-Nap-Q-1-M) under the catalysis of Sc(III)/Feng Ligand complex. With these methods, a variety of uniquely substituted chiral allyl functionalized diaryl compounds and napthopynan products were obtained in a straightforward and highly stereoselective (up to 96.5:3.5 e.r.) manner under mild conditions.
Moreover, we demonstrated that 2-Nap-Q-1-M can serve as efficient diene for a side asymmetric Diels-Alder (D-A) reaction. This principle can provide a straightforward access to hydrophenalene in an optically active form which represents a structural core of various natural products and bioactive molecules.
Using the Competing Enantioselective Conversion Method to Assign the Absolute Configuration of Cyclic Amines with Bode’s Acylation Reagents
The competing enantioselective conversion (CEC) method is a quick and reliable means to determine absolute configuration. Previously, Bode’s chiral acylatedhydroxamic acids were used to determine the stereochemistry of primary amines, as well as cyclic and acyclic secondary amines. The enantioselective acylation has been evaluated for 4-, 5-, and 6-membered cyclic secondary amines, including medicinally relevant compounds.
The limitations of the method were studied through computational analysis and experimental results. Piperidines with substituents at the 2-position did not behave well unless the axial conformer was energetically accessible, which is consistent with the transition state geometries proposed by Bode and Kozlowski.
Control experiments were performed to investigate the cause of degrading selectivity under the CEC reaction conditions. The present study expands the scope of the CEC method for secondary amines and provides a better understanding of the reaction profile.
A bis(silylene)-stabilized diphosphorus compound and its reactivity as a monophosphorus anion transfer reagent
- In contrast to the well-established transition-metal-mediated activation of white phosphorus (P4), the metal-free direct functionalization of P4 has remained rare. The conversion of P4 into a reactive zero-valentdiphosphorus compound (P2) has proven challenging to carry out without relying on metal reactivity.
- Herein, we describe the facile degradation of P4 mediated by two divalent silicon atoms in a bis(silylene) scaffold, resulting in a silylene-stabilized zero-valent P2 complex. The presence of two lone pairs of electrons on each P atom in the silylene-stabilized P2 complex enables a rich reactivity towards small molecules; reaction of the P2 species with CO2, water or a borane leads to the formation of P-C, P-H or P-B bonds, respectively.
- Notably, the P2 complex also serves as a single phosphorus anion (P–) transfer reagent towards metal carbonyls and a chlorogermylene compound, leading to the synthetically valuable phosphaketenide (PCO–) ligand and a phosphinidenegermylene complex, respectively.
Effect of immobilizing reagents on soil Cd and Pb lability under freeze-thaw cycles: Implications for sustainable agricultural management in seasonally frozen land
- Agricultural soil contamination in seasonally frozen land threatens food security. It is necessary to investigate the effects of freeze-thaw cycles on heavy metal bioavailability so as to select suitable immobilization agents. In this study, the soil was collected from a mid-latitude agricultural site in Liaoning Province, China, which was spiked with cadmium (Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+).
- Four immobilization treatments were set up, including (i) corn stoverbiochar, (ii) organic fertilizer, (iii) combined biochar and organic fertilizer, and (iv) the control group. The immobilized soils were subjected to 16 freeze-thaw cycles to temperatures of -10 °C, -20 °C, and -30 °C. It was found that freeze-thaw cycling increased the labile cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) content in the soil (i.e., exchangeable). The organic fertilizer treatment performed best in short-term immobilization, which was demonstrated by the amount of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extractable lead (Pb) being 17.3-53.3% lower than that of the other treatments, and 7.2-31.5% lower for cadmium (Cd).
- Biochar, on the other hand, displayed better long-term performance under freeze-thaw cycling. This is probably because the biochar’s organic carbon content is relatively stable, and therefore, releases relatively little dissolved organic carbon (DOC) which could re-mobilize heavy metals. Furthermore, additional sorption sites are formed and the abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups increased when biochar breaks down during freeze-thaw cycles.
- Overall, the joint application of biochar and organic fertilizer had the greatest immobilization effect, which inhibited the cracking of soil aggregates, reduced the labile metal content, and displayed both short- and long-term immobilization effectiveness. It is suggested that combined biochar and organic fertilizer may offer an effective strategy for the sustainable agricultural management of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) contaminated in seasonally frozen land.
